When shopping online customers want to feel comfortable and welcomed. If a customer doesn’t feel this way, there’s a good chance they just close the tab or back click and you lose the sale. Before customers even make a purchase on your website, they must decide whether they trust your company or not.  Your website may look great, but if there are a few important things missing, it’s harder for the customer to believe your business is trustworthy. These missteps can cause low conversion rates and shopping cart abandonment.

Here are some ways to build trust on your Magento eCommerce website:

Show That Your Website is Secure

One of your top priorities is to get a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate. Essentially, SSL is security for your eCommerce store and it is a must-have. The job of the SSL is to privately transfer data and documents between servers safely. To figure out if the website you are viewing is using SSL, you must find the little green padlock that shows up near your URL. This little padlock lets you know that the website you are viewing is secure and safe to use. Now, if a potential customer sees a broken padlock or no padlock at all, especially while going through checkout, this may cause the customer to feel uneasy about purchasing items from your website.

Security badges displayed on your website are also helpful. These badges are usually placed in the footer. It lets the customer know that your company wants them to feel safe using the website.

Visible address and contact information. Displaying phone numbers, emails, and addresses in either the header or footer will make your customers more comfortable since they now know a way of contacting you if they have a question or concern.

 Show Your Face

It’s not a bad idea to get a little personal with your customers. People tend to trust a company more when they see there are actual humans behind the scenes. Starting off with an ‘About Us’ page with a short paragraph about your company is an excellent way to achieve a positive connection with your audience. Having a page dedicated to your team members also builds trust. On this page, you can include portraits of each employee with their job title and a short description of what they do. Another option is to have a group photo of the whole team or if you’re feeling creative, a brief video that demonstrates what it’s like at your company is helpful too. Descriptions, videos, whatever you decide to do—it doesn’t have to be long. It’s okay to keep it short and sweet.

Allow Users to Review Products

The best way to show new customers your products are worthy to have is by letting customers leave reviews.  Customers will look for reviews when they are deciding to make a purchase and will most likely trust other people who have experience buying from you. If shoppers see that there are a lot of great reviews on a product, there’s a good chance they will buy it over the product that does not have any reviews. It also shows customers that other people have successfully bought from you in the past. Magento allows store owners to monitor and approve all incoming reviews before they are posted to  ensure that grammar and spelling is correct, and to weed out any inappropriate or spam comments.

Clear Product Descriptions and Images

People tend to forget how important it is to have clear descriptions of your products. Successful descriptions mean more conversions and happy customers. Customers are relying on you to describe what you are selling before they make a purchase. It also looks professional and shows that you care about the products you sell. Not only do your product descriptions need to be up to par, but your product images should be too. It’s good to show multiple views of the product: front, back, side, etc. This gives the customer a better understanding of what they are about to buy. Show different colors if you can. Customers might be lenient to buy a different color if there are no examples of it. If it’s the wrong shade they might return the item.

Make the Checkout Process Stress-free

Making the checkout process stress-free is ideal when you want your customers to trust your company. If load time is slow, customers will start to worry that their transaction won’t go through or they might even refresh the page causing them to start all over again. This causes frustration and might make the customer leave. Forcing customers to sign up for your website so they can check out will probably make them leave as well. Having a guest log in will resolve this issue because not everyone wants to sign up. If you were to go to a store in the mall and they forced you to fill out paperwork before you could purchase an item, this will discourage you from buying there, right? It’s the same online. Customers are trying to buy as quickly as they can without any hassle. Like stated above, make sure your website is secure by having a Secure Socket Layer (SSL). Customers will shy away from your website if there is no green padlock near the URL during checkout. You definitely don’t want potential customers to leave.
