When opening a Magento store, you will have access to valuable sales and search statistics, provided right in the Magento Admin. You will be able to procure and analyze information about sales, searches, and more data about how people are using your store.

It is important to know where and how to access all of this information, but it is also important to understand how to properly utilize these statistics to help your visitors find what they are looking for, help them find products they may not have been looking for.

Here’s a short list of the information provided by Magento and the best way to start using this information to help your online business grow.

1. Lifetime Sales – This is the amount of money that your store has earned since its inception. Remember that this figure dow not include delivery and shipping costs, and will also automatically concert any currencies to are selling with to your default currency.

2. Average Orders  – This is the total monetary amount earned divided by the number of orders you have received. Here you can get an idea of what your visitors are generally spending when shopping with you.

3. Last 5 Orders – Here you will find the last 5 orders placed along with customer information and the order description.

4. Last 5 Search Terms – The five most recently searched terms and the total number of searches for that term. This information is important because you will be able to pick up on possible trends. For example, if it is Christmastime and you find that there is a huge spike in searches for wreaths, you can make sure your visitors find what they are looking for by redirecting the search for “wreaths” to your wreaths category page. You could also redirect this query to a Christmas category page, encouraging them to view other holiday-related products they might be interested in. You can do that easily by filling in the “Redirect URL” after you click [edit] next to the search term.

5. Top 5 Search Terms – These are your five most popular search terms with data on the results and number of searches. Here you can see what your visitors are specifically looking for once they find their way to your online store. You should use this information to ensure that your visitors are getting what they are looking for. It’s possible that visitors are searching for a product by the incorrect name or by an alternative brand. For example, if you sell “fresh cut” wreaths by “company A” and your visitors are looking for “pine” wreaths by “company C”, redirect them to the related product. This is highly effective as opposed to their search yielding no results.

6. Comparative Sales Statistics:

– Bestseller’s Tab – your best selling products.

– Most Viewed Products – Your most viewed products.

– New Customers & Customers – Your five most recent customers and a list of the five customers with the highest total orders. Use this information for loyalty programs or offers catered specifically to high (or low) spenders.
