Art and Design – what’s the difference?

The definitions of art and design are different depending upon whom you ask. A well-known phrase on the matter states, “Good art is interpreted. Good design is understood”. To understand the beginning or modern design – we need to fast forward to the 1920’s, the beginning of the constructivist style that coincided with the Bauhaus style of art and architecture. I believe the most important shift in design here is twofold. Only when design was created for design’s sake could it become an art. The artists of the Swiss International Style and its influences were self-proclaimed designers who created strong design for only that purpose. They saw design as a skill and a craft and because of that, they made something beautiful that is undeniably art in its own right. Modern designers are continuing the progress of design into the 21st century.

Why is it important to think about this, how does this knowledge influences us, and how does it relate to our mission here at Shero Designs? As mentioned above, good art of the past was good design. Then, good design distinguished itself as an art. Here at Shero Designs we are taking things to the next level. As the world changes, the need for good design changes. Whether it be for print or web, we strive to distinguish our designs with the skill of a designer and the heart and talent of an artist.
